Abstract: The rapid evolution of Industry 4.0 is reshaping global manufacturing through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), smart automation, robotics and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In the Indian manufacturing context, AI enabled smart automation has emerged as a critical enabler for improving productivity, quality, operational efficiency and global competitiveness. This study examines the role of AI driven automation in facilitating Industry 4.0 adoption across Indian manufacturing sectors, including automotive, electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The research explores how AI technologies such as machine learning, predictive analytics, computer vision and intelligent robotics, when combined with IoT based connectivity, enable real time monitoring, predictive maintenance, adaptive decision making and autonomous process optimization. A comprehensive review of current industrial practices and policy initiatives, such as Make in India and Smart Udyog Bharat 4.0, is presented to highlight the strategic importance of digital transformation in India. The study also identifies key challenges, including high implementation costs, legacy system integration, workforce skill gaps, cybersecurity risks and uncertainty in return on investment, which hinder large scale adoption. Furthermore, the socio economic implications of AI driven automation, particularly workforce transformation and sustainability, are discussed.
